The good: The sleek RIM BlackBerry 7130e boasts a bright, sharp display, a speakerphone, and integrated Bluetooth. The smart phone is also compatible with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and BlackBerry servers, and it can access up to 10 POP3/IMAP e-mail accounts.
The bad: The SureType technology found on the RIM BlackBerry 7130e takes some practice, and it doesn’t come equipped with an instant-messaging client.
The bottom line: Despite a couple of shortcomings, the RIM BlackBerry 7130e offers Verizon Wireless customers a user-friendly smart phone with solid call quality.
BlackBerry 7130e review by PC Magazine
The BlackBerry 7130e ($449.99 direct; from $299.99 with 2-year contract) brings high-speed EV-DO networking to this popular line of e-mail devices. That makes for an irony: This handheld shines most brightly when tethered to a PC.
The year-old BlackBerry 71xx line delivers push e-mail in a more phone-like shape. It does so by using a hybrid keyboard where two letters share most keys. An advanced predictive-text system learns your vocabulary—by absorbing the contents of your address book, calendar, and the words you type in e-mails—which means that eventually, you double-tap less. This system is definitely a love-it-or-hate-it feature. Testing it out for a few minutes isn’t enough to give you a real feel for it, because it takes a while for the BlackBerry to learn your vocabulary.
PDAStreet: Hardware Reviews: Review: RIM BlackBerry 7130e - A Worthy, Fast Follow Up
The BlackBerry 7130e is a nice device with the form factor of a normal mobile phone. If you’re a data heavy user and are comfortable with the keyboard of a 7100 device, you should definitely consider the 7130e. It is a logical choice for upgraders and those who are new to RIM’s product lineup too. For those accustomed to the more traditional BlackBerry form factor (for example, the BlackBerry 7290), be sure you’re ready to make the jump to the significantly different keyboard layout before taking the plunge, however. If not, the BlackBerry 8700’s more up your alley.
Review: RIM BlackBerry 7130e (MobileBurn)
As a BlackBerry device, you can expect the 7130e to have great email support. And it does. Not only can you link up to 10 different email accounts to the device, but you can even use its push email system for your AOL, MSN, Hotmail, and Yahoo mail accounts.
The BlackBerry 7130e is available today from the Verizon Wireless website and will be available in Verizon and Circuit City retail outlets as of the first of December.
