What is EDGE

EDGE or Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution is the intermediate step between standard GSM phones and 3G service. GSM and TDMA are the two major cellular communication standards used by most cell phones in the US. GSM allows you to roam from one network to another and not lose your calls. It also allows you to take advantage o advanced features like call forwarding call waiting and SMS text messages. EDGE communications allow data transmission of up to 384 kbits/sec which is within the minimum range for 3G communications. It’s important to note that this is an add service and not an integrated service like 3G.
